The Rules

Contact sheet of the day is precisely that: a contact sheet of images, not an isolated photograph. Putting images next to each other will always create a narrative. Change the order; you change the narrative. I wanted the project to present a real, daily journey so the order in which they appear on the sheet is always chronological (left to right, top to bottom)

All photographs must be taken on the day the contact sheet is made for. I cannot re-use an image from a previous day but if something presents itself again on a subsequent journey, I can always photograph it again

Repeats are ok, indeed probably inevitable. It is only human to find yourself drawn on more than one occasion to something that interests you. Repeats are also ok because they offer the possibilities of narrative across time. On any given day I will most likely photograph the beach at least once to show what the weather is like.

Clichés are also ok, they are part of daily life.

No photographs can be taken inside where I live (or through the window looking out) except for the last one or two of the ‘Stone of the day’ which must have been found on the beach (i.e. outside) on that particular day

Nothing should be faked, touched up, or set up, but I am allowed to do some tonal and colour adjustment

The format (3:4) and orientation (landscape) should be identical for all photographs. I don’t want particular images to stand out because of their shape

Contact sheet of the day is NOT art. As soon as you (or someone else) begins seeing what you do as art you start to limit yourself. What’s it all about? What does it mean? Is that the kind of art I do / should be doing? Is it relevant? Is it important? Those kinds of questions will mean you have started to censor yourself. I’m not trying to say anything beyond presenting the day as I found it. Ok, I am trying to say something: don’t limit yourself!

Having said that, I reserve the right to decide subsequently to use some of the images as art if I so choose.

Some of the images are poor quality. So what? They aren’t art. Anyway, sometimes a bad picture works better than a good one.

I am allowed to miss days if I’m with friends or because of some completely unavoidable appointment, but NOT because of the weather. Rain or shine, I’ll be out there.
